Fake Shark – Real Zombie!

As unlikely as I think it may be, I got a request to check out a new EP Liar from Canadian Freak Pop bandĀ Fake Shark – Real Zombie! While I don’t usually do music reviews, I’m not going to pass up an opportunity to check out new music. So this week I’ve been listening through the EP every so often before I make a final opinion. This is honestly the first time I’ve listened to Freak Pop, so it took a while to sort the sound in my head. The first listen hooked me and the subsequent rounds only cemented my interest.

Throughout the EP, each song has a different feel but keeps a similar element. My first thoughts were that it had some undertones of 80’s hip hop. Half way through I felt the pace picked up and become something I could close my eyes and get lost in. I love the majority of the EP and what little I don’t like is not because it is bad in any sense, but not to my tastes. Then again there is always the song you could do without and the song that you can’t get enough of.

I’m having a hard time choosing between Afterskool Special and Paint It Gold as my favorite. It really comes down to the fact that Hip Hop really isn’t my preferred genre and Afterskool Special feels pretty heavy with that. I really like the vocals of Paint It Gold. It still has the Hip Hop feel as does the whole EP, but here I feel it blends perfectly. This is the song that really takes me and in the end, that’s always a treasure for me. There is nothing better than sitting back, closing your eyes, and losing yourself in the sound. Yet, again, there really is nothing bad about the EP.

I highly recommend that people go check them out. The whole EP is definitely a ride and if you like Mindless Self Indulgence, you’re sure to find some enjoyment in Fake Shark – Real Zombie! Even better, Afterskool Special features Jimmy Urine of MSI. So you should really check them out. Here, let me help.

I must say, I love the name of that band. I like the song you’ve embedded here, with Jimmy Urine. But the song you really liked, Paint It Gold, it’s featured on the website you linked to. And it is incredible! Laid back reggae vibe, but with a strong energy that makes the body move before it realizes it. The guitar sound is amazing, and the vocals are very fine. I’m going to have to check out their latest EP. Thanks!
